Cape Town artist creates his interpretation of Nicole

On the 1st of February 2024, a local artist from Cape Town, South Africa, announced the completion of his first painting for 2024, titled NICOLE. The painting is an oil on canvas creation with 600 x 900mm dimensions.

William Olivier, a seasoned sculptor who has focused on painting for the past few years and whose creations are displayed at Route44 art gallery on the R44, between Stellenbosch and Somerset West in Cape Town, decided to create his interpretation of Nicole, the main character in Defeated by Justice, written by Ina Brink and first published on 31 March 2022.

While reading Defeated by Justice, a vision of how he envisioned Nicole started forming in his mind. The character touched him in such a way that he felt the need to try and capture her essence on canvas. This challenge not only pushed him out of his “comfort zone” as he puts it, but resulted in a breathtaking, emotion-filled and captivating portrait.

William, who can be found on Facebook and Instagram, made the following post when he announced the birth of NICOLE to the public:

“Have you ever read a novel and wondered how the main character would look like. Well, I have done just that by creating this portrait in my mind and trying to capture the innocent beauty of Nicole, the main character in the book written by Ina Brink – Defeated by Justice.”

“For artists, inspiration gets triggered by sight, smell, sound and emotion and artists create so that others can experience their own deep-seated emotions when they relate to a work of art.” – Ina Brink

This is exactly why painters paint and writers write; magic.
